SUPPORTED TEACHING IN SCHOOLS

There can be no teacher education programme that is complete unless it includes an effective Supported Teaching in Schools (Students Teaching Practice) programme. Although there is a school of thought that “Teachers are born, not trained” the majority of people today believe that professionally trained teachers are needed in our schools. As a result, Supported Teaching in Schools (STS) is at the heart of the Bachelor of Education programme in Ghanaian Colleges of Education.

Among other things, the rationale for STS in the college is to produce highly motivated, conscientious and effective classroom teachers for basic education (ie. JHS Level) of our education system. To achieve these objectives, all partnership schools must have trained lead mentors and mentors who can support and assess the progress of student teachers. The College’s STS unit, therefore, organizes periodic workshops for lead mentors and mentors.

The image below depicts Lead Mentors and Mentors engaged in an activity during one of these workshops. The Supported Teaching in Schools (STS) Unit is headed by Mr Opoku Adusei pictured below preparing for such workshops.
